Novel Spotlight: The Love of My (Other) Life by Traci Slatton

The Love Of My (Other) Life
by Traci L. Slatton

What worlds would you move to be with your soulmate?

NYC, A BEAUTIFUL PAINTER, AND A DIMENSION-TRAVELLING PROFESSOR COLLIDE IN THIS YEAR’S MOST CHARMING BITTERSWEET ROM-COM

Just in time for Valentine’s Day comes The Love Of My (Other) Life [Parvati Press], this year’s most charming – and bittersweet – romantic comedy novella.

The latest offering from critically acclaimed author and Yale and Columbia graduate Traci L. Slatton, The Love Of My (Other) Life follows the beguiling and uncompromising Tessa Barnum, a 30-something would-be painter struggling to find her rightful place in the city that never sleeps: the ever-bustling, always-magical backdrop of New York City.

TLOMOL Front Cover Medium

Frustrated by a world that champions meaningless post-modernism and money over truth, beauty and transcendence, Tessa is about to be evicted, too insecure in her own talent to let her Turner-esque landscapes leave her closet, and emotionally exhausted by a recent divorce.

When she is suddenly faced with Brian Tennyson behind every corner – a disheveled yet devilishly handsome man who, out of virtually nowhere, claims to not only be a Yale physics professor who has uncovered a gap in the time-space continuum, but also her husband in an alternate universe (!)– Tessa finds herself on a rollercoaster ride the likes of which she never in her wildest dreams imagined she would have to be prepared for.

A touching and immersive portrait of a young woman reconciling her passions, convictions and realities with an impossible love story unfolding around her, The Love Of My (Other) Life is a surprising, funny and engrossing addition to any romance lover’s bookshelf, digital or otherwise.

Traci on the inspriation behind The Love Of My Other Life

“I wrote this novel for the hopeful romantic in all of us,” says Slatton. “I was inspired by daydreaming, really. I imagined what it would be like if a scruffy man showed up on my doorstep out of the blue one day, claiming to be my soulmate – albeit in a parallel world – and then it turned out he really was! But he couldn’t stay. Tessa is a woman with her own passion and her own center, but she’s lost her way. She’s been looking for Brian her entire life and didn’t even know it.”

nnninterview

Hello Tessa and Brian, welcome to Nightstand Novels…we are so glad to have you join us today. Tessa, what was it about Brian that made you think he was harmless.  Why didn’t you immediately go running for the hills….  well you did eventually, but not immediately…why?

I can’t explain it—it was just some subliminal sense of comfort. I just knew he was okay. Ugh! What’s wrong with me?

nnninterview

Did you feel any sense of familiarity when you two first met?

Yep, it was like my bones knew him. I kept trying to override my instincts. I mean, my instincts have landed me in a lot of hot water.

nnninterview

Yes,a whole lot of hot water from what I’ve read, Brian…what were you thinking when you first saw Tessa ?

She’s so beautiful! My Tessa! I miss her so much. It was miraculous to see her again, alive and in the flesh.

nnninterview

Did you have a plan when you decided to test out your machine? Did you even think that it would work?

I knew it would work. I don’t mean to sound immodest, but I am a genius, and my device is ground-breaking. Would you like to try it?

nnninterview

Your offer is very tempting but I’m too much of a chicken to take you up on it… you genius you, but what if you weren’t able to find Tessa? What if she wanted nothing to do with you and meant it? What if she called the police or worse.. the Psychiatric Hospital?

At the root of everything, there is goodness. That universal goodness was going to prevail—I knew it!

nnninterview

Tessa, wasn’t there just a teeny part of you that believed Brian right away? We usually don’t get romantic with “strange, crazy people” but you did…tell me about that?

Sigh. Yes, I admit it. I thought he was cute. You know, in a scruffy, down-on-his-luck, ragged way. Am I weird?

nnninterview

No, I don’t think you’re weird at all, maybe a tad bit lonely yes, but not weird. Brian..was a part of you secretly hoping to get lucky with Tessa?

It was my destiny to make love to Tessa. She really needed it, too. Boy oh boy, if ever a woman needed to get laid, she was that woman.

nnninterview

“Your destiny to make love to Tessa…sounds beautiful. Were you expecting Tessa to be exactly like YOUR Tessa…or being the “brainiac” that you are…did you know what to expect?

Good question. Are you a physicist, too? We ask good questions. I thought Tessa in any universe would be My Tessa. That was an incorrect assumption.

nnninterview

As for my being a physicist, I wish!! but since you enjoyed that question, here’s another one for you, This has been bugging me ever since I read it.. why were your shoes mismatched…did you put them on that way or did you have to find something quick once you landed?

My shoes were mismatched? Who told you that? Who can pay attention to shoes when there are universes to explore and Tessa’s to kiss?

nnninterview

That’s True, but inquiring minds still want to know about those shoes but I’ll move on  for now. So Tessa, at what point did you start to believe that Brian was telling the truth, was it at Dr. Tennyson’s lecture, or was it when HIS Tessa made an appearance

It’s crazy. I believed him when he told me that he wasn’t wearing undies when he went through his whatch-ma-callit device. Only Brian, right? It’s so nutty, it has to be true

nnninterview

Had you fallen in love with Brian..or was it the idea that he was so loving that you loved?

I have never met a more interesting, more alive man. I am truly blessed that he traveled to this world to meet me. And have you seen the Brian in our world? He’s hot!

nnninterview

Hot huh? I really wanted you two to find a way to end up together but after you, Brian had a chance to meet with YOUR Tessa it seems that things changed. You looked at Tessa as more of a sister or friend and it seemed that you no longer wanted to be with her..what happened …. and Tessa, how did his immediate disinterest make you feel?

Brian: I had an awakening. I realized that My Tessa, my one and only Tessa, was really, really gone. I also felt some peace about that. Sad peace, but peace. Tessa: It felt like a loss that he was suddenly my dear friend and not my lover, but I understood. He’s in love with her, his Tessa. It’s supposed to be that way. Brian taught me a lot.

nnninterview

How did it feel coming face to face with yourself? Were you impressed? and Tessa what did you think when you saw the two together. Were you nervous when they started their debate?

Brian: When I saw that insanely handsome devil Dr. Tennyson talking about physics? How awesome was that! Absotively, posilutely the coolest!
Tessa: Oh, jeez, I was petrified! There was no telling what was going to happen!

nnninterview

Petrified? I was secretly hoping they would figure it out right then and there. lol Brian you said you were going to destroy your machine…did you destroy it or are you maybe planning a second trip?

I haven’t really decided. I’m open to the possibilities.

nnninterview

Tessa, readers want to know what’s happened since YOUR Brian showed up at your gallery showing? Can you give us a hint as to what’s been going on with you two..are you dating? engaged? married? or will we have to wait for the sequel?

Tessa: Well, it’s just too torrid to discuss. How many X’s does this blogspot allow?”

nnninterview

Obviously not nearly enough x’s for all of that “torridness” and now my curiosity is piqued but I’ll refrain from putting you on the spot and move on to Brian. Any other inventions you’re working on? I know you are curious as to what Tessa and her Brian have been up to…have you come up with any way for you two to keep in touch or are you ready to move on having accomplished what you set out to do?

Brian: If I know myself, and I think I do, I would bet Prof. Tennyson here is figuring out a way to come visit me in my universe. And I’m going to be ready for him when he does!

nnninterview

Hmmmm…I sense a hint of things to come. If you could have a do over what things would you do differently if any?

Brian: If I could have a do-over, I would have my Tessa remove that mole on her breast—the minute we got together at college. Then we’d have ten children as soon as possible. Maybe twelve.

nnninterview

Any regrets for either of you?

Brian: I regret that I didn’t make love to Tessa more often! Tessa: I regret that I didn’t believe Brian sooner. Think what fun we could have had. But my Brian is making up for lost opportunities…

nnninterview

I just bet he is!!! Brian, nerdy geeky techie kind of guy, not bad on the eyes with a fit bod , sexy abs and can put it down, so to speak, in the bedroom and Tessa, free-spirited, spur of the moment, bleeding heart with no focus or drive content to feel sorry for herself after losing love but has a great ass… Did your author get it right about you both?

Brian: I hate to say it, but my author really understood me! Tessa: Really, you think I have a great ass? I think I need to go to the gym more.

nnninterview

As far as asses go, it’s “Meh” just kidding, it’s pretty nice… Any parting words you want to leave with our readers?

Brian: Live big, with joy! No matter what. Tessa: Have faith, and believe in your own creativity!

nnninterview

Words to live by, Thank You both for stopping by!
