Interview: “All She Craves” Author Cami Starks

Hello Cami, welcome to Nightstand Novels…we are so glad to have you join us today. Congrats on your first published novel … how has the experience been?

The experience of publishing my first novella series has been absolutely incredible. When I decided to become a writer, I never imagined the amount of work that would go into it. I’m so very blessed with each and every fan. I never expected the overwhelming kindness of the romance/erotica community. I’m so very blessed with each and every fan. I never expected the overwhelming kindness of the romance/erotica community. Wow!

How did you get started writing and Why erotica…what is it about the genre that attracts you?

camiiiIt’s funny because I cannot remember a time when I did not want to write. I was always told in college that I was a good writer and should pursue a career in writing; however, I finally decided to write when I had so many ideas in my head that I couldn’t keep track of them all. It was then that I knew I needed to get busy! I choose erotica for two reasons. First, I love to read that genre. Secondly, I choose erotica because of the readers, they are such passionate, loyal people.

Who is your favorite erotic author and is your writing style similar to theirs?

camiiiThat’s a tough one….I really like Shayla Black and Maya Banks. My writing is very different from both. I like to write action into my stories to keep the reader guessing.

How did All She Craves come about?

camiiiI wanted to write a love story that took place in the most beautiful place in the world, Kauai. I also wanted to create a book that had a lot of sex, some action, and mystery. I always tell my fans that I have undiagnosed ADD so, I needed this story to move FAST.

Why did you decide to release it in serial installments as opposed to a full length novel?

camiiiThis is such a great question. It’s all about building an audience to attract an agent. Nothing looks better on a query letter than, “I already have $x in sales, x number of fans on Facebook, Twitter, and G+.” Agents want authors they can sell. It’s as simple as that.

Are naming your characters important? How did Trisha Saul and Michael Strauss come about any significance to those particular names?

camiiiI spent about ten years in medical sales before becoming a full-time writer. Trisha and Michael are both in the medical industry. So, I wrote what I saw. Their names were chosen to convey that they are typical American’s. We will discover in future episodes how important Michael’s big American family is to him.

Did you do any research for this book? and if so what?

camiiiYes! I researched the book “Love Letters,” which is a collection of love letters, written by historical famous people to their lovers. I also, of course, had to research the karma sutra, many sex toys:)

Did you include or (expect to include) any real life experiences in the book and if so care to share?

camiiiThis story takes place on the beautiful Hawaiian Islands, which is one of my favorite places. The descriptions and places the characters visit are all drawn from real experiences I’ve had on the island.

What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

camiiiMy family and I have a small cottage in the north woods of Wisconsin and this is the only place I can write. Maybe because of the lack of internet! Lol! The other interesting writing quirk I have is the fact that I have to be alone to write. Not sure why?

Any rituals to get those creative juices flowing, glass of wine, music, stand on head and chant? lol

camiiiI’m often compelled to write in the middle of the night. The last time I wrote I was awoke at 3 am. I wrote 4,000 words before going back to bed!

A night owl huh? Are your family and friends aware that you write erotica, are they supportive?

camiiiYes, I have always been honest about my craft. When I meet someone new I will usually say I write romance but, once you get to know me you will quickly figure out what’s going on in my head! I’m certainly not shy talking about sex.

Has your family and friends read your book and if so what was their reaction?

camiiiThe majority of my friends have read my work and they have been very supportive; however, I don’t think any of my family have read my work. My family is mostly made up of men so, that makes sense. I do have a sixteen year old daughter who has never read my work (that I know of) but, she is very proud. She is a very talented, published poet herself.

What is the toughest part about writing sex scenes?

camiiiSemantics! Making sure what your putting on paper could actually happen in real life. I recently read a sex scene in another authors book. The male character was like 6’3’ and the female was only 5’ tall. In the story he had her bent over on a kitchen counter and, to me, that just wouldn’t work.

Lol no it wouldn’t work, not without a lot of stooping down or maybe the counter top was raised..anyway, Where do you get the inspiration for your sex scenes, are they purely based on fantasy or is there a little real life experience thrown in?

camiiiI would say it’s 50/50:) There is definitely some real life experience in there as well.

Do you ever get embarrassed by the sex?

camiiiNo, never. I feel, for women, sex starts in the mind and I’m here to help with that. Sex is crazy important for a healthy adult relationship so, there’s nothing to be ashamed of.

Who is your favorite Dom/character?

camiiiI LOVE LOVE LOVE Ethan from “The Blackstone Affair.”

Yes, Mr Blackstone is definitely swoon worthy! Do you hear from your readers much and if so what kinds of things do they say?

camiiiI do. I published the fist episode of the “All She Craved” series exclusively with Amazon. That means I couldn’t publish on any other site for the first 90 days. Thank god that’s over! This exclusivity also prevented me from publishing any other episodes until now so, the most common question I get from readers is “When is the next book coming out?” Guess what everyone, January 29th baby!!ETA, this interview was done before the release.

Has social networking impacted your life as a writer? and in what way?

camiiiSocial media is an absolute must when promoting your book. It’s a great way to connect with your readers on a personal level. It’s also a great way to let your readers know what’s happening with your brand. I’m confident that, without social media, there would be no indie authors.

What do want readers to take away from your fiction?

camiiiI want readers to be ready for their man after reading my books;)

and finally does sex sell?

camiiiIt certainly does! I feel that women are taking control of there sexuality and discovering what they want from a man. It’s an honor to be a part of that discovery process!
